Hollyhock -Alcea rosea- yellow and white

A classic cottage-garden staple, producing tall spires of soft yellow and pure white blooms that attract pollinators and add vertical drama to borders and fences. These biennial plants, flower in their second year and self-seed reliably for naturalized beauty year after year. Height 150–200 cm at maturity.

Sowing:
Direct sow in spring or early summer when soil reaches 18–22°C, or start indoors 6–8 weeks earlier. Sow seeds on the soil surface and lightly cover—they need light to germinate.

Planting:
Transplant seedlings or thin direct-sown plants to 30–45 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Support may be needed in windy sites due to tall flower stalks.

Harvesting (Cut Flowers):
Cut blooms when 30–50% of flowers have opened on the stalk. Recut stems under water for longer vase life.

Fertility Recommendation:
Moderate feeder—prepare soil with compost before planting. Too much nitrogen encourages excessive leaf growth; a balanced organic fertilizer at planting is sufficient for healthy blooms.
