A popular heirloom cherry tomato variety celebrated for its beautiful dusky purple-brown fruits and exceptionally rich, sweet flavour. Black Cherry produces generous clusters of small, round tomatoes with a juicy texture and a delicious balance of sweetness and acidity, complemented by distinctive smoky, fruity notes. Highly productive and full of character, this variety is perfect for fresh salads, snacking straight from the vine, and adding colour and depth to summer dishes.
Sowing:
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost in warm soil (21–27°C). Sow seeds 0.6 cm deep and keep evenly moist until germination. Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light to encourage strong, healthy growth.
Planting:
Transplant in Greenhouse after all risk of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 10°C. Space plants 45–60 cm apart and provide sturdy support with stakes or cages, as indeterminate plants can grow tall and produce long clusters of fruit. Plant deeply, burying part of the stem, to encourage vigorous root development.
Harvesting:
Harvest when fruits develop their characteristic deep mahogany-purple colour and feel slightly soft to the touch. The shoulders may remain darker than the lower portion of the fruit. Allow tomatoes to ripen fully on the vine for the sweetest flavour, and pick regularly to encourage continued production throughout the growing season.
Fertility Recommendation:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with mature compost. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer at transplanting, then switch to a tomato fertilizer higher in potassium once flowering and fruiting begin. Maintain consistent soil moisture to support healthy fruit development and help reduce splitting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.
