An easy-to-grow annual herb with striking star-shaped blue flowers and edible, hairy leaves. Borage attracts pollinators, improves soil health, and adds a mild cucumber-like flavour to salads, drinks, and garnishes. Plants reach 60–100 cm in height.
Sowing:
Direct sow outdoors when soil reaches 15–20°C. Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep and keep evenly moist until germination.
Planting:
Thin seedlings to 30–40 cm apart. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Self-seeds readily, ensuring successive crops.
Harvesting:
Leaves can be harvested young for culinary use; cut stems just above the base to encourage regrowth. Flowers can be picked as they open for decoration or infusions.
Fertility Recommendation:
Moderate feeder. Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before sowing. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce flower production.
Seeds per Packet approx. 30
