A striking biennial with tall, stately spikes of yellow flowers and soft, velvety leaves. Mullein is valued for its ornamental presence, medicinal uses, and ability to attract pollinators. Plants typically reach 120–200 cm in height.
Sowing:
Direct sow outdoors in spring or autumn when soil is 15–20°C, or start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 0.3–0.5 cm deep and keep lightly moist until germination.
Planting:
Thin or transplant seedlings to 45–60 cm apart. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerates poor soils and dry conditions once established.
Harvesting:
Leaves can be harvested for medicinal use before flowering; flowers can be collected as they open.
