Berner Rose Tomato

A beautiful Swiss heirloom variety renowned for its large, rosy-pink fruits, delicate skin, and exceptional flavour. Berner Rose produces juicy, tender tomatoes with a wonderful balance of sweetness and acidity, offering a rich, traditional tomato taste. Highly prized for fresh eating, this classic variety is perfect for salads, sandwiches, and enjoying straight from the vine.
Sowing:
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost in warm soil (21–27°C). Sow seeds 0.6 cm deep and keep evenly moist until germination. Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light to encourage strong, healthy growth.
Planting:
Transplant in Greenhouse after all risk of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 10°C. Space plants 45–60 cm apart and provide sturdy support with stakes or cages, as the plants can produce heavy fruits. Plant deeply, burying part of the stem, to encourage vigorous root development.
Harvesting:
Harvest when fruits develop their characteristic rosy-pink colour and feel slightly soft to the touch. For the sweetest flavour and best texture, allow tomatoes to ripen fully on the vine. Handle carefully, as the delicate skin and juicy flesh can make ripe fruits prone to bruising or splitting.
Fertility Recommendation:
Prefers rich, fertile soil enriched with mature compost. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer at transplanting, followed by a tomato fertilizer higher in potassium once flowering and fruiting begin. Maintain consistent soil moisture to support healthy fruit development and help reduce splitting. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.
