A striking and ornamental chilli variety known for its colourful, short, triangular fruits that transform through a spectacular range of colours as they ripen. The peppers develop from purple to yellow, orange, and finally red, creating a vibrant display against the plant's foliage. Botanically classified as Capsicum frutescens, Lila Luzi is a distinctive variety that combines decorative appeal with culinary potential.
Sowing:
Start indoors from January to February for greenhouse cultivation. Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in warm soil at 20–24°C and keep evenly moist until germination. Provide plenty of light once seedlings emerge and maintain warm conditions for steady growth.
Planting:
Transplant into a greenhouse from early spring once conditions are suitable. Space plants approximately 50 cm apart, with around 70 cm between rows, or grow individually in pots with good drainage. Keep plants warm and protected to encourage healthy growth and fruit development.
Harvesting:
Harvest fruits at any stage of maturity, depending on the desired colour and use. The peppers progress from purple through yellow and orange to red when fully ripe. Pick carefully using scissors or secateurs to avoid damaging the branches.
Fertility Recommendation:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with mature compost. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer during establishment, then use a potassium-rich fertilizer once flowering and fruiting begin. Water consistently without waterlogging the roots, and avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.
