Milk thistle

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

Milk Thistle is a hardy biennial plant known for its striking purple thistle flowers and distinctive white-veined leaves. Traditionally used for its medicinal properties, particularly for liver health, it is also an attractive addition to wildflower gardens. The plant can grow up to 5 feet tall and is often considered a beneficial weed.

Sowing Indoors: Start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors in early spring or fall.

Location: Prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade.

Soil: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil, and is tolerant of poor soil conditions.

Watering: Water moderately; the plant is drought-tolerant once established.

Growth:Milk Thistle typically grows as a rosette in the first year, with flowering occurring in the second year.

Care: Minimal maintenance is required; deadhead spent blooms to encourage further flowering.

Milk Thistle is not only beautiful but also serves as a valuable herb, making it a great choice for both ornamental and practical uses in the garden.
