A highly productive chilli variety, known for its slender, elongated fruits that mature from green to a vibrant deep red. Red Gunda produces abundant clusters of upright-growing chillies with a pleasant, aromatic flavour and a satisfying level of heat. Rated at approximately 7 on the chilli heat scale, this variety is ideal for adding a lively kick to sauces, curries, stir-fries, and marinades. Its attractive growth habit also makes it an excellent choice for pots and containers.
Sowing:
Start indoors from February to March in warm soil (25–28°C), ideally using a heated propagator. Sow seeds approximately 1 cm deep in fine seed compost and keep evenly moist until germination. Once seedlings emerge, reduce the temperature slightly and provide plenty of light to encourage strong, healthy growth.
Planting:
Transplant in Greenhouse from mid-May onwards, once conditions are sufficiently warm and the risk of frost has passed. Space plants approximately 50 cm apart, with around 70 cm between rows.
Harvesting:
Harvest when fruits have developed their characteristic deep red colour, although they can also be picked green if desired. Red Gunda also has good drying qualities, making it an excellent variety for homemade chilli flakes and powder.
Fertility Recommendation:
Prefers fertile, nutrient-rich, well-drained soil enriched with mature compost. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer during establishment, then switch to a tomato or chilli fertilizer higher in potassium once flowering and fruiting begin. Maintain consistent soil moisture without waterlogging the roots. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
